Find your unique voice to make more money: how saying "I love you" made $1m in revenue for this software company

December 12, 2018

Finding your unique voice online can be challenging for brands. How do you balance seriousness with a unique touch that readily identifies you?

Oftentimes it takes a while to find your voice. But ultimately, the most important thing you can be is authentic. People can smell a phony from a mile away.

Take CB Insights, one of the largest and most successful firms tracking Venture Capital (VC) and private equity in the world.

Their newsletters are awesome. But they weren't always so good. Once they added their own personal touch, including "I love you" at the end of each posting. According to them, that added $1m in revenue to their firm.

One. Million. Dollars. (Cue Dr. Evil pinky.) For saying I love you.

Lesson learned: authenticity is key. Don't try to fake it, online or off. If you are serious and buttoned-up, be serious and buttoned-up. If you are snarky, own the snark.

Now, I am not saying that you are guaranteed to make $1m with an authentic voice.

But, I guarantee that if you don't try to find your voice, you won't benefit.

PS -- If you are a startup, an investor or a SaaS software company, you really should subscribe to CB Insights' newsletter. It's awesome.
